Post Hurricane Checklist

Now that the winds have died down and the water has subsided, let’s all take a deep breath and remember… people are what matters. The rest can be replaced. Here are some tips to help you through this recovery process.

  • To begin with, take lots of pictures of water marks on the walls inside and out of your home, to prove how high the water went.  Document lots!
  • File insurance claims and claims for government help quickly so you get in queue.
  • Save all receipts throughout recovery.
  • If you need a POD or storage container. Move quickly to order one, as they sell out fast.

If you had water in your home:

  • Use a Shopvac to suck up what water you can and start to bag up debris, wet insulation, and ruined items and take them outside.
  • Save a sample of any carpet and carpet pad for the insurance company to verify replacement value.
  • Get anything wet out of the house, so everything can begin to dry.
  • Take pictures to document any damage you see including wet sheetrock, wet carpet, wet furniture, or anything you’ll want to claim.
  • Photograph each ruined piece of furniture, book, appliance, or item of clothing. The insurance company will want proof of each thing.
  • Once you’ve gutted as much as you can, crank up your A/C, set up fans, and consider investing in a home dehumidifier. You can also spray the exposed studs with bleach as they dry.

Before the adjustor comes:

  • Carefully inspect your roof scrutinizing valleys where roof planes intersect and anything that comes up through the roof (such as vent stacks), chimney top, and flashing to see if anything is loose or missing.
  • Visually inspect your home’s electrical service entrances to see if they’re sagging or leaning. (Contact an electrician immediately, if they are.)
  • Inspect shutters, exterior trim, gutters, and downspouts, which can come loose and fall off later.
  • Walk down your fence row and push against it to check for storm-weakened areas.
  • Inspect large trees on your property to see if they sustained significant damage.

Space heater safety tips

Space heaters can be an easy and cost-efficient way to heat different rooms in your home. They can provide steady, consistent heat while taking up minimal space and utility costs. While they can be a great heating alternative, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure they’re being used safely.

  • Keep any flammable object at least three feet from the space heater. This includes bedding, furniture, curtains and carpets.
  • Avoid using these in a child’s bedroom unless they’re being supervised. Its easy for a child to accidentally burn themselves or objects in the room.
  • Run power cord on top of carpet instead of under them to prevent overheating. Do not use extension cords.
  • Ensure to turn the space heater off when going to bed or leaving the room.
  • Only space heaters specifically made for damp or wet conditions should be used as such. Moisture from rain or steam from a shower can cause shorts and a potential shock hazard.
  • Consistently check smoke detectors to ensure they perform properly.
  • Only purchase “UL Listed” heaters which display the UL mark on their label. This is an independent organization which tests for safety.
  • Read and follow all manufacturer’s directions when using the space heater. This is the easiest and most effective way to use the space heater correctly.

Oh Snap, it’s gonna be Cold!

South Louisiana is not known for its cold weather. Only a few times a year do we experience freezing temperatures and the possibility of a hard freeze. With the lows getting into the low 30’s tomorrow and possibly Wednesday, here are a few quick reminders so you can protect your pipes and plumbing.

  • Close inside valves supplying water to outdoor faucets and hookups.
  • Open outdoor faucets to allow residual water to drain; be sure to keep them open during the cold weather, while the water supply is turned off.
  • Keep garage doors closed to help protect water pipes located in the garage.
  • Open the doors on cabinets where plumbing is located. This can help allow warmer air to circulate around the pipes.
  • For pipes that are at risk of freezing (both hot and cold water pipes), let water drip from faucets.
  • Keep the heat in your home set at a minimum of 55 degrees.

Stay warm out there!

Don’t be a Dunce!

To D.I.Y. or not to D.I.Y that is the question!?!

Safe to D.I.Y.

  • Patching drywall- Homeowners can easily fix holes in the walls left by nails. Simply make sure the wall is clean and spackle the hole. Sand down the spackle and clean the area with a damp sponge.
  • Cleaning the air conditioner condenser unit- Homeowners can easily clean this to maintain efficient air conditioning system. Changing filters regularly is also important. This all ensures the unit isn’t working any harder than it must.
  • Repairing plumbing hardware- Homeowners can easily fix items like seals, chains, or clogs. If the toilet becomes wobbly or the seat becomes loose, grab a D.I.Y. kit at your local hardware store.

Time for a Pro

  • Problematic drywall–If you have a large hole or if you have spackled it repeatedly in the past, an expert is better suited to properly repair the damage.
  • Repairing or replacing an HVAC unit- A professional that is licensed and insured is your best choice in these situations.
  • Alterations that require plumbing alterations- Permits will likely be needed in this situation. A licensed and insured plumber will know the proper permits and will ensure that the work is done correctly and the changes don’t negatively impact other areas.

Hope these tips help you have an uneventful #nationaldunceday!
