Festivals Acadiens et Creoles 2015

Acadiana is well-known for the number of festivals we host each year.  We can turn just about anything into a celebration; from holidays to food to animals, we’ve got every kind of festival you can imagine.  Our passion for celebration is intrinsic to Cajun culture.  We never pass up the chance to have a good time because we are all too familiar with hardship.

acadians

Acadians have always been devoted and hardworking people; ever since they first settled in South Louisiana, our ancestors worked incessantly to adjust to their new lives after deportation from Nova Scotia, and they struggled to keep their culture alive despite increasing homogenization of the United States.  (Read more about the plight of the early Acadians in South Louisiana.)

Fortunately, Cajun culture was preserved through our traditions, values, music, food, and general way of life.  To this day, it thrives.

And, of course, we celebrate this.  Festivals Acadiens et Creoles is a 5 day long superfestival, comprised of several different events, all celebrating the preservation of Cajun culture in South Louisiana: music performances, food fests, arts and crafts expos, and so much more!

Festivals Acadiens et Creoles begins on October 7 and lasts until October 11, so there’s plenty of time to celebrate the Cajun Way of Life and so many reasons to celebrate it.  Because we are the product of a long and difficult history. Because we are unique in our culture and traditions.  Because we deserve to have a good time.  Because we are Acadians!

Wine Down Wednesday – Baked Lemon Pepper Flounder

Flounder, like many types of fish, is healthy as well as tasty!  Paired with a lemon pepper seasoning, this baked flounder has an astounding flavor that’ll leave you wishing you had room for more!  I personally love this dish served over a bed of rice with a side of green, such as broccoli or asparagus.  Pair it with a crisp Chardonnay.

baked flounder

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 to 1 and 1/4 pounds flounder fillet
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • lemon-pepper seasoning
  • juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1/2 lemon, sliced
  • kosher salt

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 400°F.  Melt butter in a glass baking dish that will hold the flounder in a single layer.  Place the fillets in the dish with the butter, turning them several times to make sure they are well buttered.  Turn under the thinner edges, so the fillets are more equal in thickness.  Sprinkle with lemon-pepper seasoning and the juice of 1/2 lemon.  Lightly season with salt (remember there is a little salt in the lemon-pepper seasoning).  Place a few slices of lemon over the fillets.

Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the fish is opaque and will flake with a fork.  Serve immediately.

Eat Lafayette – Judice Inn

Judice Inn LogoSince 1947, Judice Inn has been one of Lafayette’s most popular local restaurants, serving what some call the “best burgers in town”.  And I must say, the burgers from Judice Inn are unlike any others I’ve had in Lafayette.  Each patty is grilled to perfection, each topping freshly prepared the morning it is used.  Cooked with a “secret sauce” to enhance flavor, Judice Inn burgers possess a quality that is unparalleled by any other burger joint in town.

Judice BrothersWhat I find just as enjoyable as the burgers is the restaurant’s long interesting history.  After World War II, two brothers Alcide and Marc Judice joined forces to open their own restaurant.  Together, with the help and support from their wives, the Judice brothers built the restaurant themselves, often working on it in the evenings after leaving their day jobs.  The restaurant opened on April 5, 1947 on a tiny budget.  The brothers worked long shifts to keep the restaurant on its feet, and eventually the hard work began to pay off; soon, Lafayette citizens were raving about the new joint, and business took off.

Judice Inn was (and continues to be) run exclusively by the Judice family; sons and daughters, sisters and brothers began working for the restaurant at the early age of 7 and were promoted to “waiter” status by 12.  Even after those children grew up and began their careers, it was not uncommon for them to return to the family restaurant to help out during busy hours.

Judice Inn

What is truly amazing about a family run business such as Judice Inn is that quality is never lost, and that customers are always guaranteed to receive the best service.  I can attest to this; in the several times I’ve visited Judice Inn, I’ve always been welcomed with a smile and treated as a priority.  Not to mention, the food has always tasted just as delicious as the time before.

Judice Inn Burger

An interesting piece of trivia about Judice Inn: In the nearly 70 years the Judice family has run the restaurant, they have NEVER sold fries with their burgers!  As shocking as this may seem, it certainly doesn’t stop Lafayette residents from filling up the joint every day.  Instead of fries, customers are offered a variety of potato chips, candy bars, or ice cream.  In addition, the restaurant also serves different types of sandwiches if you’re not particularly craving a burger, and draft beer, milkshakes, and ice cream floats are delightful alternatives to the standard soft drinks.

Judice Inn continues to be a gem of the Lafayette food industry, and one of my personal favorites.  The quality of the food and the people serving it just can’t be beat.  Drop by Judice Inn to experience an integral part of Lafayette history, and enjoy a great burger while you’re at it!
