7 facts every business should know about Millennials

“I hope I die before I get old.” The Who’s timeless lyric from “My Generation” still captures the underlying tensions that exist between generations. No matter the generational label or decade, young people have always felt misunderstood, and today is no different.
You might have heard that millennials are narcissistic, coddled, and disengaged. Yes, they take a lot of selfies, love their phones, and believe that social media is integral to their lives and relationships. But according to various surveys, they’re also more informed, civically-engaged, and open-minded than conventional wisdom might lead you to believe.
As the most populous, educated, and diverse generation in American history, millennials are fundamentally changing the landscape of the economy. Whether you’re hiring millennials or trying to sell them a product or service, business leaders should rethink the cliché stereotypes and consider the data to understand their realities, behaviors and trends. Here’s what you need to know:

They have massive spending power — but income is clustered at the top
Over the next five years, the purchasing power of millennials is projected to increase 133% from $600 billion to $1.4 trillion. But spending power will vary widely across the generation.

They have a complex relationship with Wall Street
Today’s young people came of age during the financial crisis in 2008 and have entered the workforce — if they were able to get a job — with record-high levels of student debt. Wall Street has a perception problem when it comes to millennials, as 73% of them prefer financial products from a technology-driven company over a traditional financial services firm. And as the number of recent graduates increasingly take jobs with tech startups, investment banks and private equity firms are looking less attractive as employers.

Millennials are migrating to cities and driving the success of the shared economy
This generation is moving to cities after college, and they’re staying there indefinitely. For the first time since the 1920’s, U.S. cities are growing faster than everywhere else in the country combined. This trend is impacting transportation, housing, and home ownership across categories. Millennials are using public transit 40% more and cars 23% less. Plus, they are twice as likely to participate in the sharing economy – from ride-sharing to apartment rentals.

Technology is a way of life
From home to health to personal services, millennials are adopting new technologies and will spend money with the companies that meet their increasingly high standards for new and innovative products. More than half of millennials plan to buy connected “Internet of Things” home devices in the next five years, and 7 out of 10 prefer to manage their health using mobile apps. Given this generation’s exposure to technology since childhood, their expectations will only continue to favor cross-channel and cross-platform experiences that are consistent, fast and provide actionable data.

They’re leading the shift in media consumption habits
The media landscape has drastically changed and will continue to do so. Millennials can access content anywhere, anytime and on any device, which has huge implications for traditional TV and cable. It also shouldn’t be surprising that with the rejection of traditional formats comes the rejection of traditional advertising. Indeed, 70% of people under 30 use ad blockers, and traditional TV commercials are increasingly irrelevant.

They’re more loyal to employers than previous generations
Millennials recently surpassed Gen X as the largest population in the workforce, and this trend will only continue as more millennials enter the job market. However, the widely-accepted narrative paints millennials as job-hoppers with no loyalty, which simply isn’t true. This generation may have new attitudes towards flexibility and a work/life balance, but they are loyal to employers who understand and embrace this. Millennials actually stay with their employers longer than Generation X workers did at the same ages; in fact, more Gen Xers spent less than one year at any one job.

They’re skeptical consumers
Millennials are a values-driven generation attracted to brands that stand for something. In fact, 84% of millennials will consider a brand’s values before making a purchase. But millennials also have sharp radar for authenticity, and initiatives that feel like a cynical attempt to win them over will backfire. Young people are also twice as likely as Baby Boomers to check if a brand’s corporate social responsibility claims are true and supported with specific action. A CSR message means nothing without a plan to back it up.

Why Lafayette Louisiana?

Why Lafayette Louisiana?

We are a bustling city in southwest Louisiana. Not located in wetlands, but along the Vermilion River in the south-central part of the state. This means we don’t suffer as much from floods as the other cities in our part of Louisiana. We have been described as a little-big town because of our unique contrast of city life and local Cajun traditions. We have also been nicknamed “Cajun country,” and “the Cajun heartland,” and known worldwide for our specialty foods and spices. Lafayette is the hub city of Acadiana, which is made of several other little cities (Carencro, Breaux Bridge, Henderson, Opelousas, Broussard, Scott, Sunset, New Iberia, and more). All Acadiana cities and towns have their own distinct character and are each the State proclaimed “world’s best” at something…Lafayette is known to be the State’s Festival Capital. All our little cities embrace the Cajun heritage. If you ever get the chance to visit Lafayette, here is a list of a few ways you can learn a lot about the Cajun heritage.

Visit a swamp. TheSwampre are multiple swamps within the Greater Lafayette area. There is even one in the middle of Lafayette at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which is the only on-campus swamp in the United States.

Go to Avery Island. A beautiful island owned by the McIlhenny family. The makers of Tabasco. The factory is there also. The island has a scenic drive-thru and walk-thru, wildlife, a bird sanctuary, and a botanical garden.

Stop at Vermilionville. It is an attraction located near the airport that tells the history of the Cajun people. It is a replica of an Acadian-style village. It also brings in local bands for jam sessions.

See the lights at Acadian Village. Is a little village in south Lafayette that has several traditional Acadian homes. They have great festivities and lights at Christmas time, but you can also have a tour of the property during the year.

The state of Louisiana is called the “Sportsman’s Paradise” because of the wide variety of hunting and fishing within the state and in the coastal Gulf of Mexico. Originally Lafayette was an agricultural community; oil and natural gas were found here in the mid-twentieth century, which led to an economic boom. But now there’s other sources of economic contributors, a National Guard Station here, as well as a US Marine Corps Reserve Unit. IT is also an important economic sector, with the Center for Business and Information Technologies and several IT companies are located here. But education is by far the most important sector: the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, South Louisiana Community College, Louisiana Technical College and Remington College are all located in Lafayette.  To get more information on Lafayette you can visit our chamber of commerce website: http://www.oneacadiana.org/
And like everywhere else in Louisiana, you can enjoy some fine music venues, in fact you can find free concerts almost all the time when the weather is nice, and of course with a concert comes a place to dance. A lot of children here learn to dance before they learn to walk, so you can trust you’ll need to learn some Cajun dances to fit in.

Learning some Cajun French wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Here are just a very few: cochon de lait literally means ‘pig roast’, Merci Beacoup “thank you” and the best: Mais Cha’ y’all come Laissez la bon temps rouler! “Come here sweetie, let the good times roll!”

Wonderful opportunity to own a stunning condo in the Lincoln Park area of West Seattle. This waterfront townhome, including an elevator, has been featured in both Seattle Homes & Life and Good Housekeeping magazines! The condo is an entertainer’s dream with walls of glass (or does that make them windows?), 19 foot ceilings, an open great room and exquisite natural finishes. The Italian tile floors and chiseled granite fireplace allow you to feel surrounded by elegance with every warm step you take. The gourmet granite/stainless kitchen make entertaining close to the food a definite option. A soothing cool paint palette, Zen-like master suite with view deck & spa bath w/ Japanese soaking tub complete this dream home. I won’t even mention the dramatic architecture, a nature-lovers floor-plan and the lavish use of organic materials. Oh, and don’t forget the 30 feet of waterfront.

Kitchen Perfect for Entertaining

If entertaining is your forte, there is no better place to do this then from the expansive kitchen in this amazing waterfront townhome. The stainless steel appliances make the kitchen come together, but it’s the vast amount of space that makes bringing friends together so easy. And what’s the biggest pain about big dinner parties? Dishes of course. Luckily this kitchen has two dishwashers! Fantastic, right? The huge Sub Zero fridge and freezer, which match the decor and are hard to even find upon entering the room (think, kid’s friends won’t be able to raid the fridge as easily) have plenty of room to hold food for a small army.

Lincoln Park in West Seattle

Lincoln Park, on the west side of the Alki Peninsula in West Seattle is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the entire Seattle region. With sweeping views of Vashon Island (at least from this house) and close proximity to the city, you can be downtown in 15 minutes, it’s an oasis in the city.

The Homeowners association in this neighborhood is second to none. Streets are always well taken care of, lawns are mostly manicured with the utmost care. On the off chance that Seattle gets a good dose of snow, which is pretty rare, the HOA does bring in snow removal so you won’t be stuck at home. There are two parks within walking distance and if you bring bread it will be easy to find some hungry ducks to feed. Are you a dog lover? You’ll definitely use the nearby dog park and enjoy a sunset stroll at Alki beach. Lincoln Park is a short 10 minute walk from the breathtaking views of the city offered at Alki.

Home Prices in Redmond WA for November 2012

Real estate market data for Redmond, WA provided by Ellen Smith of East Lake Real Estate Company.

Redmond Home Prices

We have seen 11 straight months of listing price increases on home prices in Redmond and don’t expect things to slow down anytime soon.  If you are considering buying a home you can still find deals on a house in Redmond but having a good real estate agent who understands the market is a must.  Don’t wait on the sidelines for too long, many of our listings are starting to sell within a few days of hitting the market. As you can see from the graph below, listings are not selling exactly for asking price. To make sure you don’t overpay for your home, you’ll want to have an agent that does a thorough market analysis of the Redmond home on which you are making an offer.

If you are interested in how much current inventory is on the market in Redmond you can find that information by clicking on the link. High inventory will suggest that homes are sitting on the market for longer. Currently in this area of Redmond, homes have a median time of 75 days on the market before they sell. This would suggest that buyers are in a great position to make an aggresive offer on a home. Sellers should make sure to price their home near the market value if they expect to get an offer from one of those interested buyers. Low inventory in Redmond has multiple offers coming in on homes similar to what we saw back in 2007. I wouldn’t expect home prices to run up quite as fast as they did back then as banks have gotten a lot stricter on lending guidelines and are no longer giving a loan to anyone with a pulse. But low inventory is one indicator that prices should continue to rise.
