Hop on over to Rayne, Louisiana next weekend for a toad-ally fun and exciting time!
The annual Rayne Frog Festival will be held Wednesday, May 11th through Saturday, May 14th at the Frog Festival Pavilion and Grounds in Rayne.
What does the Frog Festival celebrate, exactly? It all began with the Weill brothers, who in the late 1800s started a lucrative business exporting frog legs to world renowned restaurants from New York to France. On all of their invoices they wrote: “Rayne, Louisiana, Frog Capital of the World”.
The frog leg industry experienced a sharp decline in the 1970s, but the people of Rayne were reluctant to lose the title of Frog Capital of the World. In response to the industry’s decline, the first annual Rayne Frog Festival was held in 1973, preserving the town’s recognition.
Each year since then, Rayne has celebrated the impact of the frog leg industry on its town with a four day festival full of music, delicious foods and drinks, carnival rides, signature events such as frog racing and jumping, pageants, an arts and crafts show, and a Grand Parade.
So join in on the celebration; you’re in for an un-frog-ettable weekend!
